Synopsis
SONQO: Weaving Stories is a cinematic journey that celebrates Peru’s popular artists, the guardians of our ancestral traditions, and honors the masters who keep our culture alive through their hands and hearts.
Through powerful stories of strength, hope, and resilience, the documentary reveals how artisans across the country transform natural materials into works of art that connect the past with the future. From the highlands to the coast, their craft sustains communities, empowers women, and preserves the delicate balance between humanity and nature.
It is a tribute to the ‘amautas’ of our culture and a showcase that seeks to revalue the work of the hands in charge of making such wonderful products, from the field to the catwalks.
Why
Through the lens of sustainable fashion, SONQO highlights how creativity can inspire economic and environmental change. It is a tribute to the amautas, the artisans, the agents of change, and the cultural promoters who pass their knowledge from generation to generation, weaving not only textiles but the very identity of a nation.
SONQO: Weaving Stories brings to film a message of strength, hope, and resilience. It recognizes the artisans who, with their art, transmit tradition and culture to future generations, while showcasing the profound impact their work has on nature, the economy, and the world.

Connecting to the Andean Cosmovision
In the Andean cosmovision, every thread and every weave breathes, it is alive. The Sonqo, the heart, beats through the hands that weave, uniting the physical and the spiritual worlds.
Sonqo Film was born to honor the memory of the peoples, to recognize in every fiber the echo of those who, for centuries, have woven identity, territory, and hope. We follow that rhythm where textiles become maps of memory and fashion becomes a language of the soul.
Each color, pattern, and texture holds an ancestral story, a living connection between the earth, the creators, and the dreams they awaken. Through weaving, we remember that creation is also a ceremony, a way of intertwining worlds and keeping the collective memory alive.

“Led by Genaro Quispe, an amauta of ancestral knowledge committed to preserving and sharing his wisdom, we highlight the stories behind each process and creation, promoting a balance between innovation and tradition, and weaving a future that celebrates the connection between community, art, and culture.”
